French - Modern Foreign Language
Intent (What we want children to learn)
At Willingham Primary School, we teach French as our Modern Foreign Language in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6).
We aim for pupils to:
-
Develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing
-
Learn useful words and phrases on a range of topics
-
Understand simple grammar in a clear and age-appropriate way
-
Build their knowledge year by year
-
Be curious about other countries and cultures
We want all children to feel positive about languages and be ready to continue learning them in the future.

Implementation (How we teach languages)
We currently teach French using the Language Angels programme.
-
Learning is carefully planned so skills build step by step
-
Children learn through games, speaking, reading, writing and listening activities
-
New learning builds on what has been taught before
-
Teachers check understanding regularly and give support where needed
-
Lessons include different levels of challenge so all children can succeed
Children learn:
-
Key vocabulary linked to topics
-
How to build simple sentences
-
Basic grammar (such as nouns, verbs and simple sentence patterns)
-
Phonics in French
We also help children learn about the culture of the countries where the language is spoken through activities such as food, celebrations and traditions.
