Year 2: Great Fire of London
As part of their history topic, the Year 2s compared a number of paintings by Jan Griffier the Elder (1652 - 1715) and his contemporaries before embarking on their own artwork depicting the Great Fire of London.
Experimenting with paint and pastel is great fun but can be messy so the first task was to put on aprons:
We looked at the different effects that can be created using chalk or oil pastels:
We found that watercolour and felt pens did not show up on the black background but both pastels and poster paint worked well:
In the second lesson, we experimented with layering techniques, using different media to create a skyline of London in 1666:
Some children used collage as part of their design:
We had a lot of fun creating these pictures and the finished artwork looks very impressive:
